    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

While not a terrible product, there are very obvious quality differences between this product and well known brands (e.g. Sylvania Mosaic). For the purposes of this review, I will be comparing these LEDs to Sylvania’s Mosaic product which I also own.

Pros: Inexpensive, bright, Good remote & controller, decent (but cheap) power supply.

Cons: The smell, poor white color rendering, terrible pvc water proofing.

The Smell: The waterproofing on the LEDs is either an unstable chemical mixture, or simply not cured. It is obviously outgassing, as the smell is incredibly over-powering, like plumbing PVC solvent. The smell even transfers to your hands if you handle it. When left in my bathroom, the whole room will smelled like a plastic/rubber factory in about 15 minutes even with the exhaust fan running. The clear coating feels tacky, somewhat like the adhesive on a Post-it. The coating is quite soft compared to Mosaic’s strip, and there is evidence of rippling in the first few feet of the coating when I started to unreel the LEDs. The rippling is of concern because it disperses the light when directly over an LED. I allowed the reel to warm up a bit in an attempt to complete the curing, but all it did was make the room smell worse. I’ve read from another reviewer that he put his in the oven to finish it; I will not be doing that. UV has a tendency to harden plastics, so I will try leaving them out in the sun a while. Hopefully this will at least mitigate the smell if it doesn’t harden it.

Further, the waterproof coating on this product is not quite ‚clear‘ when compared to Sylvania’s. The Mosaic LED’s waterproofing looks as clear as glass, feels solid and is not in anyway sticky. It’s exactly what you’d expect from the coating. When compared to that, the generic LED’s coating is a mess.

Hooked up to the same controller simultaneously, I photographed this product & Sylvania’s at each primary color & white in a dark room. I also separately photoed a white ceiling with a lit equal length strip of each to demonstrate the color differences when set to white. The generic LEDs have quite a blue tinge to them when set at full white, while on the same controller at the same time, the Sylvania appears a true white. It can be compensated for with the controller by using a DIY setting and backing down the blue a bit, but it does dim the output slightly as well.

As for the overall output (brightness) of the individual LED SMDs, at both single primary color (R/G/B) & white, they subjectively look on par with the Sylvania’s. However, reviewing the photos it does appear as if the red output on the generic LEDs is a little less compared to Sylvania’s; this is likely the cause of the bluish-white. I do not have a lumen meter to verify this claim though.

The adhesive backing is insignificant; it’s equivalent perhaps to scotch tape. Certainly I do not believe it’s strong enough to hold the LEDs over a painted surface in a position where gravity would pull it down.

I am only publishing this review to help others decide if this is the right product for them. I intend on keeping these, but I’m not certain I would buy more for use indoors. For what I’m using them for, I don’t think the downsides definitively out weigh the lower cost. No doubt the Sylvania LED strips are a superior product, but the retail price is pretty insane compared to these. ~$40 for 4ft of single density (~6 LEDs/ft) + Controller and Power supply @ Lowes compared to ~$40 for 16.4 ft of double density (~20 LEDs/ft) with Controller and (larger) power supply.

What the 3 star score really comes down to is the smell & poor coating. If it weren’t for that, I’d be a lot happier with this product overall. I can compensate for the bluish tinge, but I don’t want to worry about getting lung cancer by constantly breathing in chemicals over some cheap lighting. Certainly I shouldn’t have to string up the lights in my back yard to dry them. When I unreeled the whole strip, there was some kind of slick goo that transferred to my hands. I expect that’s a byproduct of that coating, and probably the source of the smell.

Update: Contacted the seller about the smell. They indicated that the resin coating they use is given time to dry, but may not be fully cured when packed. The slick substance is a silica (silicon) oil they coat it with to keep it from sticking.

I left it stretched outside, hanging in the back yard for the past 2 days. Most of the smell, but not all is gone. I used a paper towel to wipe the oil off. Important note: it was a bit cool this morning, about 40*F. While reeling the LEDs back up, the coating cracked completely open in several places. After noticing this, I stopped reeling it up and just brought it inside to warm up. After running the LEDs for a few minutes, the coating became flexible enough again to finish reeling it without breaking…

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:39 Mins

I have done a lot of research and got screwed on a couple orders from other companies and ended up with lights in a sleeve. This style is great.

Pros I found after a lot of research:
Changes color vs having to install 4 light strips total with 4 strips
New version of LEDs that has a better energy efficiency vs the old bulb style
-5050 SMD is 3x brighter with larger bulbs than 3528 SMD
-The controller runs off the 12volt side so it can hook up to boat, RV, 12v landscape lighting, etc, without the 120v power supply and have full functionality.
-Can cut/connect every 3rd LED but you have to add solder or use a connector as with most RGB (red green blue, to get all color options) 5050 strips. As usual it has solder joints every foot for soldering.
-Power could be on for days and not affect my two boat batteries. Only 2 amps for the whole strip! For comparison most lights in a car dome light are 3 to 3.5 amps. So If You just used one 5050 circuit (3 lights) You would be using dozens of times less power than one normal bulb. I made 4 of these smaller strips and put them in my boat courtesy light fixtures as well, which are separate from my gunwale lights.
-Cheap controllers and remotes can be found everywhere
-Universally found products I did not know about until tonight when I started looking; even music box regulators that change the lights to the music.
    -12 Volts is safe
-power supply to test soldering as you go.

    Cons:
    – Remote was spotty at a distance of 30 to 40 feet as expected, but I plan to mount the remote on velcro next to the sensor as a light-switch type setup.

FYI If you want multiple sections spliced together instead of one long strip and you don’t want to solder the ends, the strip is 8mm wide for the size of „RGB LED strip connectors“ you will need. I got a spare controller and remote kit encase the remote dies or goes in the water for about $6. I did see a controller from someone else with way more options on it for $7 and got that to see what options it has. It is much cooler overall, but all work fine.

You can solder the smaller joints at every third led (which is a 5050 circuit). I RECOMMEND flipping the strip over and use the 4 dots on on the back to solder cleaner and easier vs cutting up the waterproofing material on the front and soldering. Then put liquid electrical tape over the soldering and use hot glue or something to keep your solder joints rigid and from bending. Every 12 inches is a solder joint pre-made with 4 balls of solder for you pre-done, To solder to this cut back the front coating (I like to leave the plastic between each ball to separate the points well so just cut off the very top) and solder to the balls by slightly touching the ball to liquefy it as you push the wire in and you are done.. Youtube has a video how to solder 5050 smd lights if I did not make sense

AC1 stamp which means that the waterproofing material is Acrylic Acid Elasticitive Waterproof Coating. NOT a cheap plastic sleeve over cheap lights. Picture of the real cbconcept brand lights: […]

These LED are awesome. Installing this thing is a NIGHTMARE. I spent 2 days installing this cause of the soldering i had to do for corners. If you dont mind the soldering or plan to install in the way that it DOES bend. then installation should be easy. I used clear silicone for extra hold after I stuck it to the bottom of the granite with the tape it came with. Used telephone cable wires for the joins. Works perfect. Nice controls.
I took one star off for the difficulty of the installation. I know this is hard for others that don’t have an engineer or electrical background. Then again if you have never soldered before; this is a great way to learn. Remember scrape of the silicone covering the connection before you solder them together. If you have enough patience to read about soldering then I’m sure anyone with common sense and some drive some people can do it without any experience, but Common sense isn’t so common. If your one of the people that have common sense but no drive.
Trust me you will regret attempting this install UNLESS you do it the flexible way. It’s ONLY flexible one way. If you intend to buy without soldering, then you can ONLY install it the flexible way.
If you want the light to face down and you install it on the roof. When you reach a corner. SOLDER TIME. if you want the light up the by facing horizontal and you are sticking them to the wall. Then your in LUCK. No Soldering for the corner in that application. Have Fun. So worth the hard work of soldering.

    UPDATE:

Just found and adapter for corner that is already soldered for you. If I would of known this it could of saved me soldering. Haven’t tried but it’s called LED Strip connector 4. Has to have 4 cables to it for colors. Don’t get he one with 2 cables. Your colors will not work. GOOD LUCK
